UFCW Canada Local 864 attends P.E.I. Federation of Labour Convention

Members of UFCW Eastern Provinces Council Local 864 attended the P.E.I. Federation of Labour Convention at the Rodd Charlottetown on Nov. 1-2 to discuss the labour movement and elect a new executive board.

The executive board was elected by acclamation, including the addition of UFCW Local 864 delegate Denton MacLean from Cavendish Farms.

The convention featured guest speakers such as NDP Hamilton Centre MP Matthew Green, who emphasized the importance of organizing communities to strengthen the NDP in P.E.I.

CUPE P.E.I. president and member of the Public Services Coalition Ashley Clark addressed constant threats to public services and the need to preserve their public ownership.

She also invited all unions to join the Public Services Coalition, sharing its future roadmap for the coming years.

Finally, Fae Johnstone from Wisdom2Action discussed the challenges faced by trans individuals and their connection to labor issues, advocating for supportive language and framing that ignore baiting tactics in favour of focusing on the freedom of children.

On Nov. 2, the convention passed all resolutions unanimously, invited and challenged Workforce Minister Jenn Redmond, and heard speeches from Canadian Labour Congress vice president Larry Rousseau, NDP P.E.I. leader Michelle Neil and CLC's regional director Danielle Sampson.
