Halifax – October 29, 2018 – Activists from the UFCW Canada Eastern Provinces Council (EPC) recently joined thousands of participants from across the Maritimes at the annual Light the Night walk in Halifax to help raise funds and awareness for the life-changing work of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada (LLSC).
At the event, participants walked in solidarity through the Garrison Grounds in downtown Halifax to help bring support and hope to the hundreds of thousands of Canadians affected by blood cancers. Walkers carried illuminated lanterns symbolizing light in the dark world of cancer – with red lanterns for supporters, white lanterns for patients and survivors, and gold lanterns for friends and family members who have lost someone to blood cancer.
The popular annual event contributes thousands of dollars to the vital research, outreach, and education work of the LLSC.
“The Light the Night Walk is really about family,” says UFCW EPC President Mark Dobson. “It was another inspiring year for our UFCW family in Atlantic Canada, and we owe a big thanks to the hard-working members and their family members for raising funds that make a positive difference in the lives of those affected by these terrible diseases,” Brother Dobson adds.
Since 1985, through contributions from members across the country, UFCW Canada has been the LLSC’s most valued partner, raising over $41.4 million and paving the way to many advancements in the treatments and outcomes of blood cancer.
